How annoying is it when you get a front wedgie in the first minute of your fitness class? These camel toe-proof undies will change your life!
By Sabrina Rogers-Anderson
Activewear technology has come such a long way in the past decade with light, breathable, buttery-soft materials that immediately wick away your sweat and feel like you have nothing on.
The downside? They can be so figure-hugging that they sometimes make you look like you have nothing on. I don’t know about you, but I’m not super-keen on “Hungry Fanny” being my gym nickname.
I do F45 six days a week, and all the jumping lunges, deep squats and burpees are front wedgies waiting to happen. The seamless G strings I wear to avoid panty lines end up jammed all the way up my birth canal and leave absolutely nothing to the imagination.
After watching a YouTube tutorial on how to cut up an old bra pad and wedge it into my undies to prevent camel toe, I headed to the gym feeling doubtful. While the pad didn’t end up on the gym floor as I’d feared, it rode up to my tummy and created a weird bulge above my now-prominent camel toe. Sigh.
“There has to be a better solution!” I thought. A quick Google search turned up several Australian camel toe-proof underwear brands. Hurrah!
Here are my top three picks to help you keep embarrassment and gym creeps at bay.
Entry level: Fitt Haven Fredgies
To say I’m obsessed with Fredgies would be a massive understatement. I road-tested these bad boys under tight bike shorts during the intense Hyrox fitness race I did recently and they certainly didn’t disappoint.
Not only did they literally feel like I wasn’t wearing undies at all - so buttery-soft and seam-free! - but the thick and wide padding across the crotch area stayed perfectly in place through all my runs, sled pushes, sandbag lunges, burpees and more. There was nary a camel toe in sight as I sailed across the finish line with a smile on my face!
OBSESSED. I’ll be buying a pair for each day of the week. They come in both regular waist and V waist in black or beige. And the lovely founders tell me they will have briefs available by the end of the year - hurrah!
Pros: Affordable, super comfy, no squeezing that creates a muffin top, and extremely effective at nixing camel toe. Bonus points for the sustainable packaging!
Cons: I can’t think of one bad thing to say about Fredgies.
Price: $22.00
Mid-range pick: Posy Active G
If butter and underwear had a love child, Posy's Active G would be it. Super-soft and comfy, it features a high waist and a padded crotch that guarantees your front bum won’t be on display for all to gawk at.
The padding isn’t as wide as the Fredgies, leaving me feeling a smidge less contained. I’ll probably stick to Fredgies for high-intensity races and get a few pairs of Posy’s Active G for everyday use. I LOVE the colour choices - black, chocolate and sand - and the high-quality feel of these little stunners.
Pros: Thick, high-quality, velvety fabric and padding that flips the bird to front wedgies. They’re packaged and shipped in biodegradable bags.
Cons: The narrower crotch may make them less suitable for gruelling conditions.
Price: $38.00 Enter code: JOYEDIT20 at checkout for 20% off your first purchase (one use per customer but you can buy as many pairs as you like).
Luxe pick: Subtldays Seamless Anti-Slip G String
I LOVE that Subtldays’ camel toe-fighting undies are made from recycled coffee beans! The eco-friendly material is breathable, sweat-wicking, odour-resistant and fast-drying, and the bamboo gusset infused with mint fibre adds natural antibacterial and cooling properties.
There was definitely no funky smell after I did a big sweat sesh at the gym and they dried within record time. They effectively controlled any lip slips, but I’m not sure if they’d withstand a splits competition. Be aware that this G string is very high-waisted and you MUST size down or it will be too big.
Pros: The cutting-edge material is good for the planet and wards off sweat, odours and bacteria.
Cons: The super high waist means they might stick out of mid or low-rise leggings. Make sure to size down from your regular size to avoid disappointment.
Price: $39.95
